Windows 8 Consumer Preview —

Well, I have installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview.  Its not a beta, just a preview of what has been developed so far.

From what I can see so far:

Cons:

  • It has no Creative Labs Audio Support at all.
  • It has no Old School ATI Graphics card support
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic is not letting me log in and install it at all.
  • You cannot change the background on the Metro User Interface
  • 3rd party software support is non-existent, however this is because its day 1 of the consumer release
  • They definitely have a long way to go on getting Metro more friendly for the desktop, its definitely designed as a tablet platform.

Pros:

  • The UI is much better then I was expecting.
  •  I’ve not linked it to my MSN account yet so I’ve not had a chance to observe the “Notifications” yet, but from what I’ve seen on the Windows Phones running Metro UI its really cool.
  • You do have a desktop, but no start menu,  the start menu has been replaced by the Metro Interface.
  • You can sync multiple computers running windows 8 with one MSN account.  This is only settings and Windows Store apps.

Playstation Vita —

Why does Sony insist on keeping this platform alive?  The massive failboat of the PSP can’t justify the cost and research into developing yet another unit that will fail.

The reason it will fail?  You are competing on a platform dominated by Nintendo, Sony also required developers for its platform to pay a huge incentive to develop games that will run on things like the PSP, PS2 and PS3.  Also, your 2 years to late.  You can snazz it up by adding a “cool” touch pad on the back to make it feel more natural.  Sony doesn’t have the developer support for accessories and game titles.

If they really want to spice this thing up, they already have some PS3 integration, why not take it a step further and allow the import of games from the PS3 to allow people to play on the go?  Right now with its design you can download portions or scaled down versions of the games, and ONLY the games you download from their online game store.

Apple’s recent data mining issue —

Apple today made an announcement that its going to more deeply examine and remove Apps from its growing App Store that harvest information from your iPhone and iPod touch. The social app Path was found to be sending a complete copy of users contact lists to its servers. My question is: Apple, Why the hell are you not already vetting for this? You already don’t allow competing apps onto the app store? any one slight mis-coding and an app gets rejected. There isn’t a chance some or all of this doesn’t come up in the vetting process or when the vetting process was being developed. I’m not an Apple hater by any means, but I get infuriated when a company with a very secretive business structure overlooks something as simple as protecting end users data. The worst part is, this issue has existed since June 2007. How many apps out there have taken address books/contact lists used the data in them for the app makers marketing?

You want to know why you’ve moved into 2nd place in the smart phone market? Its because your making bone headed mistakes that Android has done right. Every App placed on Google’s certified Android Market is required to disclose what the phone will be accessing on the device every time the app is updated. Most iPhone apps are updated silently, the end user isn’t notified of what changed, just that the app isn’t available for a few minutes before you can use it after it was updated.

Now that its a known issue, Apple whether or not they knew about this obvious hole, is correcting the issue, but it may be too little, too late.

Apples Legal Tactics —

You know, I’m getting so sick of Apple suing everyone just because they design and build a phone that looks similar to yours.  No one in the world will confuse an iPhone for any other phone.  Yes, we get it that you’ve made a new generation of phone, and yours is questionably the best phone on the market, however people go to the store specifically for an iPhone. The people who “shop” for other phones know they can’t afford your high dollar piece of glass or want something with better hardware or more options for applications because you don’t allow better competing products to be put onto your “App Store”, especially since they all use Android and has a “Market Place” or their own proprietary store.    Just because you are now #2 in all smartphone sales, doesn’t mean you have to sue because you can’t compete.

The “Beta” Machine —

This is the computer I use to test software, such as the upcoming Windows 8 operating system.

Specs are as follows, and is current.

Intel Core2 Quad Core Q6600 2.4GHz x4

Gigabyte G41M-Combo DDR2/3 Socket 775

3GB DDR2 Kingston RAM

SoundBlaster XFI Sound Card

ATI All in Wonder 2007 (Last model all in wonder card made by ATI before AMD bought them out) 256MB GDDR RAM

  • Dual Link DVI + Proprietary ATI video Input
  • Dell 19″ IN1910N LCD Monitor @ 1366×768
2 x 160GB Seagate IDE Hard Drives – Believe me, I only run those slow bastards for compatibility reasons.  When hard drives start dropping in price I plan on upgrading them to SATA drives ASAP.

Software:

  • Ubuntu 11.10 with basic LAMP server software
  • WebMin (remote server managment software)
  • Mangler (Linux Ventrilo Client)
  • Skype
  • Virtual Box (For running Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista in their own separate environments, also vital for troubleshooting issues on possibly virus contaminated hard drives)
  • WINE HQ
  • Valve Software  Steam Client

All I can say is, this is a great system for troubleshooting since I have/can run Windows of every make and model, in virtualization.  And Ubuntu 11.10 running as the host I can ensure that none of my systems on the home network can get infected by an outside hard drive.

This system also functions as a backup for my Web Server.

Media Center PC —

The Specs for my media PC hooked up to the big screen are as follows:

Intel Core2 Duo 2.66 Ghz Dual Core

Gigabyte EP45-UD3L Main Board

  • 60″ Sony SXRD DLP Projection Television running at 1920×1080 interlace (1080i)
  • 2 HDMI Input Channels (I use a switcher for my third HDMI input)

Generic 7.1 non-branded audio card with 2 Optical outputs as well as standard analog.

600GB Western Digital Hard Drive in this one also, and a generic DVDRW drive.

Software

  • Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Edition
  • World of CasualCraft
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • iTunes (for video podcasts)
  • gMote Server (for remote KeyBoard/Mouse control from an android/iphone touchscreen) Very Cool BTW, and yes you can even “Right Click” on it.
  • TightVNC (Remote Access)
  • Hamachi VPN Client
  • Microsoft Security Essentials

I want to give a shout-out to Barry Harsh providing the essential component of the entire setup.
